Circle of Hendrick Danckerts, Dutch 1625-1680- View of London from Greenwich Hill, with the old Observatory to the left and the palace to the right; oil on canvas, bears old label with inscription 'Greenwich many years ago'. Bought from Hales Place Sale Canterbury July 1880' attached to the reverse of the upper horizontal stretcher bar, 54.5 x 100.4 cm. Provenance: Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 2 April 1971, lot 8 (as English School, c.1680).; Anon. sale, Sotheby's, London, 3 April 1996, lot 84.; The estate of the late designer Anthony Powell. Note: In 1657 Danckerts joined his brother in England, where Dutch artists were much in demand, and he was soon employed by King Charles II as Court Painter, producing commissioned topographical views of Windsor Castle, Hampton Court Palace and the Queen's House in Greenwich, as well as his remarkable views of the harbours of England and Wales. The present work was clearly produced by an accomplished artist working in Danckert's ambit.
