Woman embraced by a man;

pen and brown ink and brown wash on paper, bears inscription 'van Hook' (on the old paper mount lower centre), bears inscription 'cook maid & gardener' on the reverse of the paper mount, 19.2 x 15.2 cm.

Note:
The present work is by the same hand as another drawing which was offered at Christie's, Amsterdam, 25 November 1991, lot 54, described as 'A Youth fondling a Courtisan' by the Circle of Sir Anthony van Dyck. This drawing appears in the same format as the present work, with similar dimensions and cut corners, as well as also bearing the 'Van Hook' inscription on its mount. Van den Hoecke was one of the principal assistants in Rubens's studio in the 1630s. He later travelled to Italy where he resided for a decade in Rome, and subsequently worked as a court painter in Vienna and Brussels.
