Circle of Michiel van Mierevelt (Dutch, 1566-1641)
Portrait of a gentleman, half length, in a gold embroidered silk sash, a sailing ship off the coast beyond
oil on canvas
74 x 62cm
From The Principal Contents of an East Anglian Estate.
Sold for £1,300
Condition report:
Oil on canvas which has been lined. The canvas has good tension and is in plane. There is evidence of mould growth on the reverse of the painting and a thick layer of dust. The paint layers are in a stable condition but have suffered from wear and abrasion. There are areas of overpaint across the painting, for example the lace of the collar has been largely reconstructed and the abraded original is visible below. The varnish is slightly dull and yellowed but even overall. There are deep scuffs and scratches in the upper half. The gilding on the frame has suffered from water damage with extensive wear and loss. The painting is poorly held in the frame with bent nails. 175 PC old Christie's stencil to the reverse. Braided cord old hanging to the reverse.
