Circle of Sir Edwin Henry Landseer, Head study of a man in profile

[ translate ]

Property of a descendant of William Beckford & The Dukes of Hamilton
Circle of Sir Edwin Henry Landseer
Head study of a man in profile

oil on canvas, laid on panel
unframed: 26.5 x 24 cm.; 10 1/2 x 9 1/2 in.
framed: 29.1 x 27.1 cm.; 11 1/2 x 10 3/4 in.

Condition Report:
The canvas is laid on a panel which is uncradled, flat and stable. The paint surface is slightly dirty with a slightly uneven varnish. There are very few and scattered faint scratches and a spot of restoration visible in the background just to the left of his profile underneath his nose (visible in the illustration). The impasto hatching remains largely intact. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals the uneven varnish, which fluoresces more lightly around the aforementioned area of restoration as well as in the dark area of his shoulder on the left which also appears to have some repaint. Otherwise just a few small spots in his neck are visible. In overall good condition.

Provenance:
Mary Louise, Duchess of Hamilton (1854-1934) (her inventory label on the reverse: M.H.);
Thence by descent.
