Hard boards, original publisher's blue cloth with gold lettering on spine and front board, gold Virginia State emblem on the front board; 6" x 9"; inscription on the first blank page dated 1941; frontispiece portrait, 360 pages, no index, a few page corner folds, name is pencil written inside back-cover, a little soiling, very good condition.
Original first edition of Dr. Claiborne's memoir which is "among the best, if not the very top of the Virginia books published by Neale which are not exclusively military" [Krick, 30-31]. In regards of the Civil War, Dr. Claiborne provides excellent material on field medical services, supply shortages and Confederate surgical efforts.
