LOT 0101

Classical Etruscan Terracotta Head of Youth

[ translate ]

**Originally Listed At $1400**

Classical World, Etruria, central Italy, ca. 600 to 400 BCE. A terracotta bust in the classic Etruscan (and Magna Graecian) style, showing a youth's head in high relief framed on a round, flat background. The youth's face is framed by his wavy hair. Unlike later in Rome, where heads like these were individually sculpted, these Etruscan ones were molded and probably did not represent individuals. Nevertheless, this bust and others like it have incredible lifelike details, especially on the eyes and shape of face. When first made, the piece would have been painted naturalistically. As today, youth was idealized, and unmarred facial features represented strength and innocence; this is a hopeful portrait. Size: 6.85" W x 10.5" H (17.4 cm x 26.7 cm)

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-William Froelich collection, New York, USA, acquired in the 1970s

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.
