Through the years, Royal Doulton has interpreted the Toby Jug in a variety of characters, including Cliff Cornell, an American Industrialist from Ohio. Mr. Cornell commissioned jugs in his own likeness which were given as gifts to friends and business associates. These jugs were also sent at Thanksgiving with a greeting card saying that Cliff Cornell was sorry he could not be there, but place the jug on the table and it would carry his greetings. The similarity between the Cornell tobies and the Churchill tobies was not accidental. Reputedly, Mr. Cornell was an admirer of Winston Churchill. - Men of History
