Amazing Habsburg coat of arms made of Istrian marble, depicting the double-headed eagle with St. George in the centre. Origin: private collection, northern Italy. Exceptional and unique workmanship, with remarkable care for the details, and animals anatomy, from the birds talons to the feathers, etc. Charming decorations, best when hung up on a wall. Inlaid with St. George in the centre, who is on horseback killing the dragon. The double-headed eagle was adopted as imperial coat of arms for the first time by the Roman Emperor Constantine I, called the Great, and lasted as a coat of arms in the Eastern Roman Empire until the last dynasty of Byzantine emperors. Today, the Greek Orthodox Church uses the double-headed eagle as a heritage of the Byzantines. This coat of arms was later used by the Habsburgs, emperors of Austria and kings of Hungary, and by the Romanovs, czars of all Russia. One-of-a-kind lot of rare beauty.
