Cocle Macaracas Polychrome Dish w/ Abstract Zoomorph

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle, Macaracas type, ca. 800 to 1000 CE. A hand-built pottery pedestal dish known as a fruitera with 4 arrow-shaped slits carved into the top of the stem. Within the circular basin is an abstract zoomorphic creature, its surfaces covered in and emanating spiked barbs, that exhibits a saurean-type head and enormous claws on each of its thick limbs. Size: 10.5" Diameter x 6.875" H (26.7 cm x 17.5 cm)

Provenance: private Ferndale, Michigan, USA collection; ex-private Detroit, Michigan, USA collection, acquired prior to 2004

Condition Report: Professionally repaired and restored from many pieces, with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines. Abrasions and craquelure, with light fading to original pigment in scattered areas, otherwise in good condition. Nice preservation to original zoomorph motif within basin.
