Colima El Chanal Pottery Face Jar

[ translate ]

**Originally Listed At $150**

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, El Chanal, Post-Classic period, ca. 1250 to 1550 CE. A hand-built pottery jar with a rounded base, a globular body, a tall spout with a lightly-flared rim, and a trio of applied suspension loops - one on the chin and two on the verso. The front depicts a stylized anthropomorphic visage with coffee-bean eyes, a tab-shaped nose, raised parallel lips, and large ear spools, all beneath the arching brim of a helmet. The spout has a trio of conical protrusions which, when coupled with the incised crescents between each, resemble a second minimalist face. Beneath the calcifications are traces of original orange and red pigment, suggesting this was at one time vibrantly decorated. Size: 4.625" W x 5.8" H (11.7 cm x 14.7 cm).

Provenance: private Andrade collection, New York, New York, USA, acquired in the 1960s; ex-private New York, New York, USA collection

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

#131514
Condition Report: Repaired from multiple large pieces with small chips along break lines. Extensive calcifications across exterior, minor abrasions and nicks to base, face, body, and spout, with fading to some finer details, and chipping to surface pigment. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
