Colima Pottery Portrait Vessel w/ Helmet

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery vessel in the shape of a portrait head. The vessel exhibits a slightly convex but stable base, a hemispherical body with raised decorations, and a conical spout protruding from the verso. The obverse bears a stylized anthropomorphic face, perhaps that of a warrior, with puffy cheeks and forehead, an upturned nose, pursed lips, and coffee-bean-shaped eyes. An intricate helmet rests atop the head with a peaked frontal brim as well as two pairs of scalloped flanges. Size: 4.25" W x 4.5" H (10.8 cm x 11.4 cm)

Provenance: private Healy collection, Studio City, California, USA; ex-Arte Primitivo, New York, New York, USA, before 2010

Condition Report: Repair and possible restoration to portion of spout exterior, with resurfacing and overpainting along break lines. Small nicks and light pitting to face, helmet, spout, and base, with fading to pigment in scattered areas, and light encrustations. Nice preservation to face and helmet. Old inventory labels as well as old black-painted inventory number beneath base.
