Colima Pottery Warrior Whistle Figure w/ Spiked Mace

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A fine example of a hand-built Colima warrior figure standing atop attenuated legs and arched feet. The warrior wears a thick waistband and loin cloth, ankle and wrist bands, thick shoulder pads, and a diagonal strap around the shoulders which holds a formidable spiked-headed mace on the verso. A form-fitting helmet with a prominent crest rests atop the characteristically-minimalist head, and a mouthpiece for a whistle on top produces a high-pitched tone when played. Size: 1.625" L x 1.8" W x 3.625" H (4.1 cm x 4.6 cm x 9.2 cm); 4.6" H (11.7 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s

Condition Report: Repairs to mace and helmet, with small chips and light resurfacing along break lines. Minor abrasions and nicks to feet, body, arms, and head, with light encrustations within some recessed areas. Nice earthen deposits throughout. Whistle produces high-pitched sound when played.
