Colima Redware Figural Vessel Seated Female

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, Protoclassic period, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. An impressive, hand-built pottery vessel in the form of a seated female enveloped in a rich glaze of burnt sienna. Adorned with a pair of bangles, annular earspools, a necklace, and a headdress, the otherwise nude woman presents a rotund body with square shoulders, diminutive limbs, and delineated genitalia. Applied clay dots, representing ceremonial cicatricial marks, adorn her shoulders. She presents an expressive visage comprised of slanted, coffee bean-shaped eyes, narrowed brows, a protruding nose, puckering lips, lengthy ears, and a pointed chin - all topped by a headdress which also forms the flared spout.
