Provenance: The Estate of Joseph H. Frost III, San Antonio, Texas

After a hurricane struck on September 5, 1622, nine Spanish ships sank between 30 and 70 miles to the west of Key West, Florida. Among them was the Nuestra Señora de Atocha, the almirante of the Spanish fleet that carried as much as 40 tons of silver, gold and assorted riches. After being lost for over three hundred years, the Atocha shipwreck was discovered in July 1985, making it one of the most famous underwater archeological excavations in history.
