Colombian Rio Magdalena Pottery Urn Base

Pre-Columbian, Northern Colombia, Rio Magdalena, ca. 800 to 1500 CE. A huge, hand-built terracotta urn with a flat base, a tall, cylindrical body, and a rolled rim. A decorative program of segmented, tendril-form lines as well as a pair of abstract lizards detail the rim exterior. This vessel would have once had a highly-detailed anthropomorphic lid, as is common with Rio Magdalena urns of this type. Size: 8.75" W x 11" H (22.2 cm x 27.9 cm).

Provenance: ex-private Boulder, Colorado, USA collection;ex-private Denver, Colorado USA collection; ex-HDE Enterprise, before 2010

Condition Report: Restored from dozens of pieces with some small losses, new earthen material, and adhesive residue along the break lines. Age-commensurate surface wear, fading to decorative program, and light roughness to surfaces. Great earthen deposits, mineral deposits, and root marks throughout.
