Colorful Ecuadoran Bahia Polychrome Seated Figure

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Bahia culture, ca. 300 to 500 CE. A hollow-built pottery figure of an intriguing form depicted seated with bent legs atop an integral rectangular plinth. The figure rests one arm atop both knees and holds the elbow of one arm atop the hand of the other. A large medallion is centered on the chest, with petaloid shoulder pads surmounting each arm, and white finery embellishing the ears and prominent nose. Thick layers of orange, red, dark grey, and white pigment imbue the figure with a colorful presentation evocative of ancient Ecuadorian artistry! Size: 4" W x 8" H (10.2 cm x 20.3 cm)

Provenance: ex-private lifetime collection of Dr. Saul Tuttman and Dr. Gregory Siskind, New York, New York, USA, 1980s

Condition Report: Repairs to both arms and part of head, with resurfacing and overpainting along break lines. Minor nicks and abrasions to base, limbs, body, and head, with fading to original pigmentation, and light encrustations within some recessed areas. Nice earthen deposits and great traces of original pigment throughout.
