Title/Content of Map: Colton's new Rail Road and County Map of the United States the Canadas &c.
Cartographer:
Date: c1868
Publisher: G.W. & C.B. Colton & Co
Size: 31.75Height - 37.75Width

The original owner of this fine case map was Charles Alfred Millson who on one panel on reverse wrote his address: "Chas E. Millson Lake's Circus in care of William Lake." Lake was a celebrated clown but also the financial mind in several early circus efforts between 1862-1869. The last, the Hippo-Olympiad and Mammoth Circus which he managed up until his untimely death; assassinated by a angry patron arrested for gaining admittance without paying. Lake, whose true and lawful name had been William Lake Thatcher, was followed for the next three years by his wife Agnes Lake Thatcher who was a tightrope walker and lion tamer as well as gifted with front office management. In 1876 she married lawman Wild Bill Hickok. He too was assassinated. A final entry on another panel shows Charles Alfred Millson to have resided at “164 46th Street near Elm” in Cincinnati, Ohio as of date July 22, 1868 having apparently left the show. He died in 1893 and is buried in Cincinnati. Includes ornamental border. Good margins. Insets of "Proposed Railroad Routes to the Pacific Ocean"; and "Southern Part of Florida". Fold repairs with miniscule loss. A very scarce map, not listed in 30 years of Antique Map Price Record. Handsome map for display with added panache of 1870s circus connection. Last one published before 1869 Transcontinental Railroad Spike. Cloth cover worn, map quite clean. William Lake Thatcher's Road Man's Copy With His Pencil Notes About Circus Life, Travel, Expenses ($5.00 for lion's meat)
