Conrad Martin Metz, German 1749-1827- The Death of Florine of Burgundy; pen and black ink and monochrome wash heightened with white on wove paper, signed and dated 1813, 56x69.5cm Note: As there are scarcely any recorded female warrior martyrs from the crusades it is almost certain that this work depicts the death of Florine of Burgundy and her husband Sweyn the Crusader, just after they led fifteen hundred horsemen into battle during the First Crusade. Their last moments are depicted as Sweyn cradles the dying heroine, her armour cast off on the ground beside.
