Cornelis de Bruyn ( 1652-1727 ) - Palmyra alias Tadmor
Copper engraving by Cornlis de Bruyn ( 1652-1727)
The upper half is a panoramic view of the ancient ruins in the oasis city of Palmyra, which belongs to Syria. You can see numerous ruins and preserved architectural fragments.
In the lower half there are images of a total of 12 coins or medals, mostly showing the front and back, with Greek inscriptions.
At the bottom edge is an (artist?) monogram: BMF.
From the second volume of the French edition of the work, published in five volumes in 1725: Voyage au Levant.
The author of the work is the artist Cornelis de Bruyn, who travelled to the countries described in it and secretly created preliminary drawings on site (due to the prohibition of images in Islam) for the etchings that were later produced from them.
Well preserved, with folding, and red colored paper edge on the right.
Condition: On laid paper with watermark: lily ligated with monogram CVS and JH. With the platemark right, left and bottom. Slightly stained. Two smoothed out longitudinal folds of the book edition. Nice impression.
Sheet size: 28. 2 x 40. 8 cm
