Couple of statuettes - Wood - Bembe - Congo DRC
COUPLE Bembe culture, Democratic Republic of Congo. First half of the 20th century. Wood and bone. Height: 15. 5 cm. (restorations on the hands and feet, ancient crack) Couple composed of two little statuettes forming a pair. They are standing, present short, bent and separate legs, resting on large feet with digited toes. Their bodies present a swollen belly marked with geometric scarifications in relief, they have two almond eyes made of incrusted bones, and an incised hairstyle. The hands of the feminine figure are facing the sky and her breasts are in relief. Her masculine counterpart is holding a knife and a gourd in each hand, his genitals are indicated and a beard decorates his chin.
