The work was probably inspired by the figures of saints painted by Ambrogio da Fossano, known as Il Bergognone, such as the saints painted in the church of Santa Maria della Passione in Milan. In particular the Saint Lawrence preserved in the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, attributed to Il Bergognone's circle. The painting in question was created several decades later and was influenced by the Counter-Reformation culture, specifically the confessional climate of Carlo and Federico Borromeo, which permeated Milan in the second half of the 16th century.
