Currier, Amelia 1845 Early American Folk Art Lithograph
Original Early American Folk Art in its antique wooden frame.
The antique 1845' hand-colored lithograph, by Nathaniel Currier accomplished in the pre-Currier & Ives era when Nathaniel Currier was publishing and creating works on his own, by himself, prior to partnering with James Merrit Ives in 1857.
"Amelia", original hand colored lithograph, by Nathaniel Currrier, marked at the bottom, "Lith & Pub. by N. Currier, 2 Spruce St. N.Y., Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1845 by N. Currier, in the Clerks office of the District Court of the Southern District of N.Y."
The litho has a few old dump stains at the edge; there is a 2.1/2" long vertical crease at the bottom, and 1" long crease at the top of the artwork [see photo]; the famed artwork measures c. 17.1/2" x 14" [44.5cm x 36.6cm]. The frame shows some wear and scratches, the wooden board covering the back shrunk c.1/4" which is a normal sign of antique wood, new hinges for hanging, good+ condition.
The lithograph shows a young woman, full-length portrait, facing left, seated in a parlor, with a framed print of "Washington's Reception by the Ladies" on the wall in the background.
Nathaniel Currier (1813-1888) was an American lithographer, who headed the company "Currier & Ives" with James Ives.At fifteen, Currier started what would become a life-long career when he apprenticed in the Boston lithography shop of William and John Pendleton. In 1835, He founded his own lithographic business as a sole proprietorship. He initially engaged in standard lithographic business of printing sheet music, letterheads, handbills, etc. However, he soon took his work in a new direction, creating pictures of current events.In 1840, Currier began to move away from job printing and into independent print publishing. In 1850, James Ives came to work for Currier's firm as bookkeeper. Ives' skills as a businessman and marketer contributed significantly to the growth of the company; in 1857, he was made a full partner, and the company became known as "Currier & Ives".
Lithography involves grinding a piece of limestone flat and smooth then drawing in mirror image on the stone with a special grease pencil. After the image is completed, the stone is etched with a solution of aqua fortis leaving the greased areas in slight relief. Water is then used to wet the stone and greased-ink is rolled onto the raised areas. Since grease and water do not mix, the greased-ink is repelled by the moisture on the stone and clings to the original grease pencil lines. The stone is then placed in a press and used as a printing block to impart black on white images to paper.
