Cushing (Peter)
Cushing (Peter)
A vintage Mabel Lucie Attwell colour postcard sent by the actor to his wife Helen handwritten in his familiar blue ink and dated 3.vi.52 which reads: "Dearest darling Helen. You are such a brave, wonderful little chap! It was so lovely to find you so ‘perky’ and everyone said how good you (?)’.... continuing ‘it won’t be long before you are home again. It will be so lovely dearest, I miss you so much darling, it’s not the same without you", 5 x 3"
***Cushing was a prolific writer to his wife whilst they were apart and often sent postcards by Mabel Lucie Attwell, this one featuring to the front one of her familiar child characters, smiling as she holds a frying pan and fork with the caption ‘She does the jobs about the house – she washes up without a grouse – she gives the furniture a rub an’ – wot is more – she cooks the grub!’ below which Cushing has written “An now she must rest xx more xx”. He has also written “Mi Mumma” at the top of the postcard. Unsigned and unaddressed which suggests it may have been hand delivered by Cushing, perhaps while his wife was in hospital recovering from an illness judging from the content. Peter Cushing was famously devoted to his wife, Violet Hélène Beck, and in later years Cushing became increasingly reclusive following her death in 1971. Accompanied by four candid family photographs of Cushing (5)
