D. NIPPS MILL CREEK CONTRACT US 1840 MUSKET

Nipps made rifles under contract to the US Government from 1842-1848. This example is dated 1842 at rear of lock along with Mill Creek PA. This was a .69 caliber version of the Model 1835 with a 42" round barrel, three band with metal rod, bayonet lug and front sight part of front band as well as sling swivels. The D. Nipps and eagle on lock are not visible. This has a Maynard Tape Primer type percussion conversion as described in Flaydermans book which is why the center stamp on lock is missing as is the tape primer but the special flat side hammer and barrel are present. About 4500 of these rifles were made in time for the Mexican War. The top of barrel has sharp US stamp with JH inspector stamp. Left side of stock has two crystal clear cartouche stamps in ovals. All metal is a rich dark patina and the stock is in excellent condition. Fine working order. A seldom seen US contract arm that was period converted. A
