DESIGNERS UNKNOWN. SUTRO BATHS. Group of five original
DESIGNERS UNKNOWN SUTRO BATHS. Group of five original bathing suits.
Sizes vary. Two adult-sized and 3 child-sized suits.
Condition A- / B+: some wear and holes in fabric; flaking in text on each.
Bathing suits such as these were once required rentals for swimming at the Sutro Baths, which opened in 1896. This selection represents a range of styles over multiple decades of the Sutro Baths' history. The suits with serif-type font are pre-1933, while the deco font are post-1933; this is the year in which the baths' policies were updated and they no longer required the Sutro-issued bathing suit rentals. The green suit which reads "Sutros" was most likely produced toward the end of the Baths' history, making it the most modern of the group. Use of the building began to decline in 1937, and the structure was finally demolished in 1966. Images available upon request. From the collection of Marilyn Blaisdell.
