Fully restored sturdy wooden daiwa-hibachi 大和火鉢 (ancient Japanese fire bowl) . A Kyôto-style table version of the more well know naga-hibachi. Made from precious Keyaki wood (Zelkova - "Japanese oak") with a beautiful warm brown varnish. The front with four drawers, of which three in a row. The row drawers equipped with a ‘fiddlehead-fern’-handle, and the drawer above these with a kiku 菊-shaped (chrysanthemum) knob. All these drawers run very smoothly. The sides set with ‘melon’-shaped handles. The large square indentation for the coals is fitted with a copper liner. The smaller square indentation for utensils covered by a loose solid lid. On the inside a removable wooden tray. The hibachi is in a very good condition. Beautifully restored, and with a nice shine. Height 30. 3 cm, Width 73. 4 cm, Depth 47. 2 cm. The hibachi is a traditional Japanese heating device. It is a brazier which is either round, cylindrical, or box-shaped, open-topped container, made from or lined with a heatproof material and designed to hold burning charcoal. It is filled with incombustible ash, and charcoal sits in the centre of the ash. Hibachi were used for heating, not for cooking. It heats by radiation, and is too weak to warm a whole room.
