§ Dame Barbara Hepworth (British, 1903-1975) Theatre Nurse (study) signed and dated 'Barbara Hepworth 48' (lower right) red chalk on paper 33 x 24cm (13 x 9in)
Literature: Nathaniel Hepburn, 'The Hospital Drawings', printed on the occasion of the exhibition at The Hepworth, Wakefield, Tate Publishing, 2012, p.64 Other Notes: Hepworth was known first and foremost as a sculptor, but also worked in a variety of other mediums. One of her daughters suffered from osteomyelitis, and so Hepworth was a regular hospital visitor throughout the 1940s. From 1947 to 1949, Hepworth gained access to operating theatres at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital in Exeter and the National Orthopaedic Hospital in London, producing numerous drawings based on her observation of doctors and surgeons. 'Theatre Nurse' (1948) is one from this series of nearly eighty drawings Hepworth produced during this two-year period.
Condition Report: Three creases down the left side, one of which extends approximately 2 inches across the width of the drawing. There is a tiny smudge over the top of the nurse's head and to the bottom above the date. Evidence of tape/label in the top right corner. Paper slightly discoloured.
