Dankvart Dreyer (b. Assens 1816, d. Barløse 1852)

“Egnen mellem Vejlsø og Skovbjerg Banker. Formiddag”. Landscape south of Silkeborg in Jutland. Morning. 1841–1842. Signed Dreyer. Oil on canvas. 92×123 cm.

Leo Swane, A Catalogue Raisonné of the Works of Dankvart Dreyer, 1921, no. 112.

Suzanne Ludvigsen, A Catalogue Raisonné of the Works of Dankvart Dreyer, 2008, no. 135, ill. voI 1 p. 66 and ill. and mentioned vol. 2 p. 164. Here, Suzanne Ludvigsen writes enthusiastically about the painting (in Danish): “A large and meticulously composed painting, rich in the fine details we recognize from earlier works. A winding stream reflects the summer sky in its clear waters. Green ferns, lush grass, cushions of heather, and hummocks crowned with flowering bilberry plants create a vibrant foreground. An additional pictorial element—no doubt intended to captivate prospective collectors—is a full-grown stag gazing out across his domain. Nor are the characteristically left-leaning trees absent: here, two graceful birches, and beyond them a sweeping view of the lake and the gentle Jutland landscape.”

Exhibited: Charlottenborg 1842 no. 88. Kunstforeningen, “Dankvart Dreyers Arbejder”, 1912 no. 52.

Provenance: The first owner was probably the artist's brother, the priest Jørgen Gantzel Blicher Dreyer, who was the father of Lieutenant Johan Nicolai Tilemann Dreyer. Lieutenant Johan Nicolai Tilemann Dreyer, Odense (1882). His widow Augusta Dreyer (1912). The collection of Consul General Johan Hansen no. 291 (1927) and no. 301 (1931), here listed with the title “Landskab fra Himmelbjerg-egnen med skovklædte Bakker under Uvejrsluft” (Landscape near the Himmelbjerget with forested hills under stormy weather) and dated 1839. His auctions, part V, Winkel & Magnussen 128, 1933 no. 29, ill. p. 9 with the title “Egnen mellem Vejlsø og Skovbjerg Banker. Formiddag”. Kunsthallen auction 278, 1967 no. 45, ill. p. 17. Kunsthallen auction 282, 1968 no. 62, ill. p. 31. Bruun Rasmussen auction 581, 1992 no. 52, ill. p. 45. Bruun Rasmussen auction 583, no. 35, ill. p. 29 (the two auctions at Bruun Rasmussen with incorrect reference to Swane and description).
