DOMENICO FEDELI known as IL MAGGIOTTO (Venice, 1713 - 1794) [attributed to] The wine seller Oil on canvas, cm. 72 x 54 Frame size cm. 96 x 78 x 5 approx NOTES: Certificate of Guarantee and Lawful Origin. Work with frame (defects) : ". . . Beautiful antique painting, oil on canvas, from the 18th century, depicting a woman with a hat and a basket with wine, in the act of selling, behind a man, probably a customer. For the quality and style characteristics it has been attributed - by a well-known Italian auction house - to the hand of the painter Domenico Fedele known as Il Maggiotto (Venenzia, 1713 - 1794) . The painting shows an interesting expressive power of a Caravaggesque character. The artist, therefore, recognizes himself as a participant in that naturalism that characterizes the Venetian school, where the language of Merisi evolves according to distinct trends. The idea in the attribution of the artist Domenico Maggiotto is not surprising. These particular portraits of character and undoubted relevance to the eighteenth-century Venetian school evoke the style of the works of Giovanni Battista Piazzetta (Venice, 1682-1754) . The results, however, lead to the pupil Domenico, when he modulates the tenebrism of the master by updating it in a baroque key. Born in Venice in 1712, of humble extraction, Domenico Fedeli has been attending the Venetian studio of the painter G. B. since he was about ten years old. Piazzetta in S. Giuliano, sharing the autumn and / or collaboration with Giulia Lama, Egidio dall’Oglio, Francesco Capella, Giuseppe Angeli and Antonio Marinetti known as il Chiozzotto. Joined the fraglia of Venetian painters in 1750, the following year the Maggiotto was part of the College of painters, holding various administrative positions. The artist never left Venice, the city where he continued to work at least until the ninth decade of the century, passing on to his son Francesco the vast repertoire of his subjects extracted from the incomparable lesson of the Piazzetta of which he was one of the most important students. Fedeli's pictorial production is divided into three periods: the first “piazzetesco” (1740-1754) ; that of the renewal crisis, inspired by G. B. Tiepolo (1755-1765) ; the last, where the revival of early models in the Nordic and Arcadian style prevails (c. 1765-1780) . The work in question brings us back to Maggiotto, a disciple of Piazzetta, and his character heads revisited as genre subjects of bucolic and pastoral taste. The data that lead us to the attribution thesis are manifold: the half-length genre scene, the very quick pictorial conduct, the use of red clay as a background preparation and today resurfacing, and the girl's exophthalmos (the characteristic eyes " a ball ”protruding, of the characters of the Maggiotto) and finally the close connection with the“ Girl selling fruit ”of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam. Regarding its state of conservation, the canvas is in fairly good general condition considering the time of the painting, the pictorial surface shows a patina varnish. We can see - in Wood's light - scattered restorations: one horizontal above the face of the figure on the right; one in the left part of the thicket of the right figure; and some small restorations scattered in the background. There are also some slight unveiling and oxidation of the pictorial surface, however nothing really relevant. The painting has been reupholstered, there are no conservation problems and the canvas does not seem to need interventions. In sunlight, a fine crackle is visible compared to the time. The measures of the canvas are cm. 72 x 54. The painting is sold with a black and gold frame (the dimensions of the frame are approx. 96 x 78 x 5 cm, defects) . ORIGIN: Coll. private PUBLICATION: Unpublished; MYTHS AND THE TERRITORY in Sicily with a thousand cultures.
