Dutch School, Late 18th Century

Trompe l'Oeil Collage of a Psalm Page and Fragments
Signed "Fecit P. Overgaauw" at l.c. edge, with the dates "1779" and "1783" within the composition, inscribed "Psalm 60" within the composition.
Ink, watercolor, and graphite on paper, sheet size 7 x 5 3/8 in. (17.8 x 13.8 cm), matted, unframed.
Condition: Soiling to the edges of the sheet, some thin spots to the paper at the upper margin, partial watermark to left margin, remnants of old mountings in the corners of the reverse, hinged to back mat in two places at the top edge of the reverse.

N.B. The intricately detailed work at hand is thought to be a page from a Liber Amicorum. The creator's name is inscribed bottom center. The date 1783 is written to the left of the signature. The date 1779 appears in the trompe l'oeil fragment in the lower left quadrant. Psalm 60 is titled "To the Chief Musician" and is described as a Michtam of David. The term michtam is used in the Bible in the headings of Psalm 16 and Psalms 56 to 60, possibly to suggest atonement.
