Letter Signed, “E. Gerry”, 1 p., 7” x 9” with integral address leaf, Havre, France, August 8, 1798 to Mr. Collet. Expected mailing folds, Fine condition. Beautifully housed in a custom red and black presentation book with gilt titles to cover.

The letter reads, in full, “You’l please to go on board the brig Sophia with / my baggage, & request of Mr. Humphreys to / send by you a bill on Bourdeaux for the / sum mentioned below in favor of Mr. Delamotte / Fifteen Hundred Sixty Two Livres Nineteen Soll.”

Elbridge Thomas Gerry (1744 -1814) was an American politician and diplomat. As a Democratic-Republican, he served as the fifth vice president of the United States under President James Madison from March 1813 until his death in November 1814. The political practice of gerrymandering is named after Gerry.
