EARLY AND VERY RARE 1684 REFERENCE TO THE PENNY POST - fine 1684 account from William Howell to The Countess of Plymouth itemising charges for services and disbursements paid on her behalf including several instances where he paid postage for her mail, most significantly of which is the charge on 30 Oct. 1684 "pd ye penny post for ye letter". Extremely early reference to the Government penny post which had begun in 1682 after Dockwra's penny post was absorbed into the General Post Office. Rare.
