EARLY HALF STOCK LONG BARREL SPORTING RIFLE

NSN. Barrel length. 40". Caliber .45. The only marking is found on the lock which reads Atkinson Warrented. This may be the maker of the rifle or simply the lock as was often the case. As to which Atkinson, there are six listed in the American Gunsmiths book. The style of this half stock lends to the 1830's period or a bit later which may be James who worked in Washington County PA from 1833-1836. Rifle features full octagon barrel, small knife blade front sight, single leaf rear sight, percussion hammer not converted, double set triggers with walnut half stock, pewter tip, and checkered wrist. No patch box or carvings. Comes with period oak rod. Hammer will not stay cocked so will need some tinkering. Metal is a gray patina with overall salt and pepper texture. Stock is excellent with no cracks. Bore is very sharp. A fine example of an early percussion period sporting rifle with long barrel. (A)
