Egidius Mengelberg showed an interest in painting early on. He received his first lessons from Johann Peter von Langer in Düsseldorf and founded a painting school in Cologne. He worked as a portrait painter in Koblenz, Elberfeld, Wuppertal and Cologne and became one of the most sought-after portaitists in the Rhineland.
