Printed invitation for Eleanor Roosevelt to John F. Kennedy's 1961 Presidential inauguration,

Printed invitation for Eleanor Roosevelt to John F. Kennedy's 1961 Presidential inauguration, 3 pp, 152 x 240 mm, with portraits and printed signatures of JFK and Lyndon Johnson, with original printed ticket, her seating assignment stamped to the verso: "The President's Stand," Row C, Seat 9; with inaugural program 155 x 235 mm; all housed in their original numbered envelope, notated with her seating assignment, as well as "Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt."
Provenance: sold Camelot: 50 Years After Dallas, RR Auction, Boston, October 24, 2013, lot 53.

Eleanor Roosevelt wrote to Kennedy soon after the inauguration, "I think "gratitude" best describes the sense of liberation and lift to the spirit which you gave. I have re-read your words several times and am filled with thankfulness. May we all respond to your leadership and make your task easier." Interestingly, Mrs. Roosevelt had opposed Kennedy's nomination in 1960, supporting Adlai Stevenson even as far as the Democratic Convention in Los Angeles. According to Richard Reeves, she "had refused to sit on the inaugural platform with Kennedy and his family, wrapping herself in a mink coat and an Army blanket in the crowd below the stand" (Profile of Power, p 421). A rare relic of two of the most important presidencies of the 20th-century.
