ENGLISH 18TH CENTURY ROYAL COPPERPLATE ENGRAVING

This rare engraving recognizes that Charlotte Viscountess Townshende is the Baroness Ferrers of Chartley. Engraved by Jos. Edmondson who was Mowbray Herald (1764-1786). Signed and dated 1767 in the plate. Hand Colored. Sight measures 16.75 x 20.50 inches. Has margins. Framed behind glass. Overall measures 23.50 x 26.75. Some foxing and soiling. Colors good. Light toning. Note: Chartley Manor belonged to Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex (Pictured at top of engraving) ; Chartley Manor became one of the last places of imprisonment of Mary, Queen of Scots; Charlotte died in September 1770 and was succeeded in the two Baronies by her eldest son George, who was created Earl of Leicester in 1784 and later succeeded as second Marquess Townshend.
