ENGLISH SCHOOL (17TH CENTURY)PORTRAIT OF A LADY, PROBABLY APHRA BEHN (1640-1689)Oil on panel 18 x 14cm (7 x 5½ in.)In a 17th century carved and silvered picture frame.Aphra Behn (1640 - 1689) was a spy for Charles II, and later in her career, one of the first professional English playwrights. Her best-known works are the early novel Oroonoko; or, the Royal Slave, and the play The Rover with one of the main parts being played by Nell Gywn who came out of retirement specifically for the role.Behn is buried in the cloisters at Westminster Abbey.A similar portrait of Behn, attributed to Mary Beale, is housed at St. Hilda's College, University of Oxford.
