Early 19th C. Hawaiian Coconut Scrimshaw Bowl w/ Whales

South Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, ca. early to mid-19th century CE. A wonderful, hand-carved coconut shell bowl with a round but stable base, tall walls that terminate in a thin rim, and an integral handle arching over the top. Beneath each handle terminal are incised images of stars, flowers, and an anchor beneath a radiant sun, and both the front and back of the bowl feature an incised depiction of a humpback whale. Size: 4.5" L x 4.2" W x 4.2" H (11.4 cm x 10.7 cm x 10.7 cm)

Condition Report: Minor abrasions to base, body, and handle, with light encrustations within basin, otherwise intact and very good. Nice earthen deposits within basin, and great traces of incised iconography visible along exterior surfaces.
