Early 20th C. African Bamana Wood Painted Puppet Head

Western Africa, Mali, Bamana culture, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. An amusing, hand-carved wooden puppet head from the Bamana people of Western Africa. It has a slender, tubular handle with two lateral perforations and one on the base, and presents a large head with exaggerated features such as cupped ears, an aquiline nose, a narrow facial profile, a wide mouth, and silver-painted eyes. The entire puppet head is painted in a bright-yellow hue save for the domed head and bottom of the handle. A wonderful example! Size: 8.5" H (21.6 cm).

Provenance: ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, USA acquired prior to 1970
