Early 20th C. African Bamana Wood Slit Drum w/ Figure

West Africa, Mali, Bamana peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden drum with an ovoid body, a central slit that leads to a hollow interior, dozens of incised striations that create a rasp-like instrument around the exterior, a conical lower handle, and an integral abstract anthropomorphic figure on top. Instruments like this are perhaps used during the Sogo Bo, puppet masquerades for which the Bamana people are most famous. Dark patina has developed along most surfaces. Size: 5.375" W x 29.25" H (13.7 cm x 74.3 cm); 31" H (78.7 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: ex-private St. Petersburg, Florida, USA collection, acquired in April 2017; ex-Artemis Gallery; ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, USA, acquired prior to 1970

Condition Report: Repairs to top and bottom of vertical opening, with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Nicks and abrasions to body, handle, and integral figure, with chips and fissures to figure and lower handle, and light encrustations. Great dark patina throughout.
