[ translate ]

Indonesia, Bali or Java, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A charming wood, textile, and leather model of two dancers wearing the elaborate costume of a Barong, a lion-like creature who is king of the spirits and leader of the hosts of the good in Balinese mythology. Pretty crystal-colored glass panels decorate the lace-cut leather that covers much of the surface. The dramatic face is carved of wood and gazes fiercely at the viewer, while the wooden dancers appear as simple legs and torsos below the ornate costume. Size: 16" W x 14.3" H (40.6 cm x 36.3 cm)

Provenance: private Johnson collection, Los Angeles, California, USA

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

#137329
Condition Report: Wear commensurate with age on the textile surfaces, which are faded and frayed in some places. The leather has also weathered slightly, with some of the edges curling. Light deposits on all surfaces. Detail is very nice with great remaining form.
