Early 20th C. Guatemalan Pottery Boar Mask
Central America, Guatemala, ca. early 20th century CE. A wonderful mold-formed pottery mask depicting the naturalistic visage of a boar. The animal presents with recessed ovoid eyes beneath heavy brows, a tubular snout with delineated nostrils, huge cupped ears, and a pair of tusks which wrap around the snout. The exterior is decorated with a dark-brown pigment, and small chips reveal a thin layer of chalky-white plaster below. Size: 8.5" W x 8" H (21.6 cm x 20.3 cm).
Provenance: Estate of R. Pearson, Denver, Colorado, USA; Mr. Pearson collected from the third quarter of the 20th century until he passed away., acquired from Arte Primitivo Gallery, New York, New York, USA; ex-private New York, USA collection, collection in the 1950s and 1960s from Mexico, and acquired via descent; purportedly ex-collection of Annette Nancarrow

Condition Report: Repaired from multiple large pieces with some restoration along obverse and adhesive residue along break lines on verso. Small nicks and abrasions to ears, snout, face, and peripheries, with fading to some areas of pigmentation. Light earthen deposits throughout. Stabilized with two wooden rods on verso.
