East Asia, Japan, ca. early 20th century CE. A skillfully carved wooden sculpture of a Daruma, a Buddhist monk, sitting with both hands placed in his lap, wearing flowing robes with drapery folds cascading over his head and body. The Daruma looks out with inlaid glass eyes and a focused countenance. The daruma sits upon a charming wooden chair that dates later, but complements him quite nicely. Size: 7.5" L x 8.375" W x 9.75" H (19 cm x 21.3 cm x 24.8 cm) Size of chair: 10" L x 12.5" W x 12.75" H (25.4 cm x 31.8 cm x 32.4 cm)

Condition Report: The Daruma figure was carved from four separate pieces that were skillfully joined together. Surface wear with losses to pigmentation as shown. Chair dates later, shows normal surface wear with expected scuffs and chips, but serves to display the Daruma nicely.
