Early 20th C. Javanese Painted Wood Dance Mask

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Java, early 20th century CE. A hand-carved and hand-painted wooden mask depicting a character from the Indonesian dance drama known as Topeng, a theatrical performance in which one or more dancers don masks and act out ancient tales about mythical heroes or kings. A fabulous example donning a finely carved floral headband painted in burgundy red and golden yellow hues over he black curly coiffure and above an expressive visage comprised of bulging eyes, a dramatically upturned nose, and parted lips bearing golden teeth. Eyes, nostrils, and mouth have openwork for the wearer. Amazing patina on the interior. Size: 6.2" W x 7.375" H (15.7 cm x 18.7 cm)
