Early 20th C. Papua New Guinea Incised Polychrome Bowl

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Sepik River region, ca. early 20th century CE. A remarkable handmade pottery bowl with a pointed base and broad, annular rim. The exterior of the immense vessel is adorned with an intricate pattern of dense linear, triangular, ovoid, and geometric motifs formed from applied pottery cords with impressed segmentation and painted in vibrant hues of ochre, russet, and chocolate brown. A magnificent example from Papua New Guinea! Please note that the Lucite stand is for photography purposes only. Size: 13.5" in diameter x 5.625" H (34.3 cm x 14.3 cm)

Provenance: private Tucson, Arizona, USA collection, acquired between 1950 and 1985

Condition Report: Two collection labels on interior, as well as "128 / M" inscribed in yellow pigment. Repaired from at least six pieces with break lines and adhesive visible in some areas. A few minor areas of rim have been restored from new clay. Char marks on interior. Otherwise, excellent with lovely earthen deposits.
