Early 20th C. Visayan Islands Steel & Wood Sword

Southeast Asia, Philippines, Visayas (southernmost islands of Luzon), Visayan people, ca. early 20th century CE. A handsome example of a Visayan panay tenegre, a sword with a steel blade with a wide belly and downward pitch to its angle. The handle is made of tropical hardwood, carved into a mythical animal's head and neck with a single piece of shiny white bone clenched between its carved teeth. The sword is protected by a scabbard made of two sheets of thin wood with leather straps around its upper portion and middle, as well as tightly woven fibrous twine around its upper center. Size with sheath: 2.45" W x 26" H (6.2 cm x 66 cm)
