Early OLIVE COTTON - "She-Oaks" (1927)

[ translate ]

1927 photograph "She-Oaks" in gelatin silver print, by pioneering Australian female photographer Olive Cotton, age 17 at the time

Olive Cotton was born in 1911, and her love for the camera started young, when she received a Kodak Box Brownie at age 11 (1922). Her childhood friendship with Max Dupain made them an infamous pair on the 1930s Australian photography scene. She joined the famous Sydney Camera Circle in 1939, working around Australia in her field and exhibiting internationally
Cotton became a national "name" with a retrospective and touring exhibition 50 years later in 1985

This early image of She-Oak plants rustling in the breeze embodies the Pictorialist landscape style to which she was drawn at the time of its capture.
