[ translate ]

Heading:
Author: Krascheninnikoff, Stephan Petrovich
Title: Histoire et Description du Kamtchatka...
Place Published: Amsterdam
Publisher:Chez Marc Michel Rey.
Date Published: 1770
Description:

2 volumes bound together. [4], xvi, 439; [4], 492, [1] pp. With 4 folding copper-engraved plates containing 6 illustrations of natives; 2 folding copper-engraved map sheets which would combine to form one map. (8vo) 16.5x11 cm (6½x4¼"), period (original?) marbled boards, contents untrimmed.

Important early history. The map on two sheets is "Carte du Kamtchatka Dressée sur les observations de Mr. Kracheninnikow raportées dans son Voyage au Kamtchatka par Mr. L'Abbé Chappe D'Auteroche de l'Academie Royale des Sciences." Some sources call for seven plates, but the directions to the binder at the end of this copy call for six "figures"; present are four plates (three folding) containing six illustrations, numbered I to VI. Bookplates of Charles Atwood Kofoid and University of California Library and withdrawn stamp.

Warren Heckrotte notes: At the time I bought this book, I didn't understand about original state, copies in boards, uncut, etc. I showed the book to Warren Howell and asked him about having it rebound. His response wasn't particularly educational. He said, "why do you want to re-bind it, you're not going to read it?"
Condition Report: Rubbing to boards, spine strip perished but stitching holding; contents fine, in rare original untrimmed state.
