School of Adrien Manglard’s studio, Lyon 1695 - Rome 1760 He was introduced to the art of Claude Gellée, whose effects of light and aerial perspective he retained, and to the art of Salvator Rosa, whose powerful contrasts of chiaroscuro he borrowed. He acquired an official status in 1736 and 1737 at the Académie de Saint-Luc, then at the Royal Academy of Paris later, following a request that he would have accompanied paintings created by himself. He then specialized in seascape painting. He first exhibited in 1736 in a "collection" by S. Giovanni Decollato. He received commissions from many large families of the time in Rome, including the Rospigliosi family, Colonna or Pamphili, and Philippe de Bourbon, Duke of Parma. In 1757, the latter commissioned a hundred paintings of landscapes and coastal views for his palaces in Parma and Colorno. In 1735 he joined the Académie de Saint Luc and two years later joined the Académie Royale de Paris. He specialized in seascape painting and his Roman clients were the Rospigliosi, Colonna or Pamphili families as well as Philippe de Bourbon, Duke of Parma who commissioned him, in 1757, a hundred and forty landscapes and coastal views for his palaces in Parma and Colorno. Famous in his day, he is now better known as joseph Vernet's master.
