\Artist: Ecole romantique - XIXe siècle
Technique: Oil on canvas\Signature: Hand signed\Dimensions: 54. 5_68_0_cm
19th century French school A romantic still life with a sword, a book, a bottle and white and red roses Oil on canvas 54. 5 x 68 cm Modern frame 68 x 82 cm Signed on the bottom left (barely legible) "J Tassart"? In fairly good condition: visible restorations (see photos) on the top left around the glass and bottle. This impressive still life is also an allegory of epic literature that flourished at that time with authors such as Walter Scott and his disciples. The red and white roses could refer to the famous War of the Roses in England. The sword and helmet evoke chivalry, wars of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The book obviously refers to literature since the glass and the bottle evoke the inspiration of the writer. The style and inspiration are very characteristic of the Napoleon III period, as the French emperor and his favourites were fond of historical evocations and works of art evoking an idealised national history. The signature is difficult to read because this part of the painting is very dark, but under artificial light one can read "J Tassart". A painter named Jules-Edmond Tassart, active at that time and who died in 1895, could be the creator of our painting. He was a pupil of Brissot de Warville and exhibited at the famous Salons from 1877 until his death. He was also a member of the Society of French Artists.
